Förgät mig
a new play by Milja Sarkola
Förgät mig (Forget Me) is a contemporary drama about Gunnel, a senior EU administrator on the verge of retirement. Gunnel is determined to fulfil her final wish in life: to be completely forgotten.
Gunnel isn’t unhappy, just unsentimental. She has no children, no life partner, and she lives alone. Others are bewildered, even shocked, by her choices. But why is that? What values and ideals is she expected to live up to? And what would life look like if others decided to live like her?
Why does the thought of being remembered scare me? Am I not alive, have I not lived, if I leave no trace bearing my name?
Förgät mig is an intriguing exploration of mortality and legacy, social norms, and how we project them. It challenges the tenets of a culture where the individual is always expected to claim centre-stage.
The inspiration behind acclaimed stage director and playwright Milja Sarkola’s latest play is a true story about a real-life Gunnel and her self-imposed solitude.
